From holding a black bear skull to discovering the marine life of Long Island Sound, White Plains elementary students immersed themselves in the wonders of the natural world Tuesday during the district’s Elementary Summer Program at Post Road School. The program, which serves about 300 students in grades K-4, blends academic support with engaging, hand-on experiences designed to keep children learning throughout July.

With more than two decades of experience in special education and a lifelong passion for helping children reach their fullest potential, Lori Graham has joined the White Plains City School District as its new Secondary Director of Special Education. Ms. Graham brings more than 20 years of experience serving students with disabilities in a variety of roles, beginning her career as a speech-language pathologist before advancing into educational leadership.

What began as an idea in middle school has grown into a nationally recognized engineering achievement for White Plains High School graduate Francis Fokoue-Nkoutche.The Class of 2026 grad earned a Silver Medal in Engineering at the National NAACP Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) Competition in Chicago for developing an innovative headset that helps youths with sensory disorders hear directed speech while filtering out distracting background noise.

While many students are enjoying summer break, hundreds of White Plains City School District scholars are spending part of their vacation building skills, preparing for Regents exams, exploring civic engagement and preparing for college. Spread across White Plains High School, the summer programs serve about 600 middle and high school students through a wide array of opportunities designed to help them succeed, according to Assistant Principal Sara Hall, who serves as the summer principal. The traditional middle school program focuses on English Language Arts and math. Students are identified through various data points, including class grades, state assessments and academic growth assessments such as NWEA's Measures of Academic Progress (MAP). "It's really giving them the prerequisite skills to be successful in the following school year," Ms. Hall said Wednesday morning.

After building a successful career leading mathematics, science and STEM initiatives across New York City and Westchester County, Irene “Minnie” Iannuzzi has joined the White Plains City School District with a clear mission: support teachers, inspire students and make learning more meaningful through real-world experiences. As the district's new Director of Mathematics, Science, Engineering and Career and Technical Education (CTE) for grades 7-12, Ms. Iannuzzi brings more than two decades of experience as a teacher, instructional coach, school leader and district administrator. Throughout her career, one philosophy has remained constant. "I always think of myself first as a teacher and as an educator," Ms. Iannuzzi said. "I'm there to support, I'm there to give guidance, I'm there to be your thinking partner. But I also have high expectations. I've always described myself as tough but loving."

Summer learning is in full swing at Eastview Middle School, as rising sixth- and seventh-grade students started the Summer Horizons English as a New Language (ENL) Program, which is in its fifth year, this week

About 20 teachers spent several days this week strengthening their understanding of the White Plains City School District’s Arts & Letters curriculum during a professional learning workshop organized by the Staff Development Center. The sessions – led by teachers Karen Cook and Jeanette Castilla at Eastview Middle School – focused on helping educators deepen their understanding of the curriculum’s instructional resources and assessments as they prepare for the 2026-27 school year.

Administrators from the White Plains City School District met on Thursday for their annual retreat to reflect on the 2025-26 school year and continue planning for the upcoming 2026-27 school year. 

The District will be undertaking improvements to vehicle access at the physical education circle at White Plains High School. As part of our ongoing efforts to maintain efficient access to our athletic facilities and enhance traffic flow, the District will be installing an electronic gate at the entrance of the physical education circle. This improvement is designed to help keep access routes to the gyms and athletic fields clear and ensure parked vehicles are in the designated parking lot. Installation of the new gate will begin on Tuesday, July 7, 2026.

One year after breaking ground, members of the White Plains Board of Education got a firsthand look Thursday evening at the emerging Innovation Wing, the district's future hub for Career and Technical Education, the arts and collaborative learning at White Plains High School. "This is the one-year anniversary of the groundbreaking ceremony," architect Joseph Ciserano, Studio Director with H2M Architects + Engineers, told the  group at the site. "From a hole in the ground to a building that's well on its way to being completed, I think it's an excellent time to see it." Also taking part in the 30-minute walk-through were Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph Ricca, Assistant Superintendent for Business and Operations Dr. Ann Vaccaro-Teich, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Debbie Hand and WPHS Assistant Principal Sara Hall.

The White Plains High School Class of 2026 crossed the stage at Westchester County Center Thursday evening to officially graduate from high school and begin their next chapter. The commencement ceremony was marked by hundreds of proud family members and friends cheering on the 567 graduates.

Rising ninth-grade students from Highlands Middle School took a big step on their educational path at the Westchester County Center Thursday afternoon, finishing their middle school journeys and moving up to high school. Five-hundred and eight students from the Highlands Class of 2026 were recognized as eighth grade graduates.

The City of White Plains will host its free National Night Out celebration from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, August 4, 2026. National Night Out is a nationwide community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie and public safety. Join for an evening of entertainment, activities, public safety displays, refreshments and opportunities to meet the men and women who serve and protect the community every day! Two public safety building tours will also be offered at 6:15 p.m. and 6:40 p.m.

The White Plains City School District will offer free summer meals for children 18 and under this summer. Summer meals will be offered at White Plains High School from June 30 to August 17 and at Post Road School from July 6 to July 31. Breakfast will be served from 9 to 9:30 a.m. and lunch will be served from 12 to 12:30 p.m. The White Plains Public Library has also been added as a lunch-only meal site, serving lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. All kids are welcome! No registration or sign-up is needed. 

The hallways of Post Road School were filled with cheers, smiles and fond memories as graduating seniors returned to their former elementary school for a Senior Walk celebrating how far they have come. The event, now in its second year, welcomed seniors back to the school where their educational journey began just one day before their high school graduation. Students were greeted by former teachers and staff, received childhood photos of themselves from their years at Post Road and walked through the halls as current students waved congratulatory signs and applauded their accomplishments.

The future Innovation Wing at White Plains High School is rapidly taking shape, with school and construction officials reporting that the high-tech hub for Career and Technical Education, arts instruction and cutting-edge learning opportunities is progressing ahead of schedule. Principal Emerly Martinez led a tour of the construction site Monday for engineering teachers Al Martinez, Giordano Garcia and Chad Allen, offering a firsthand look at the two-story addition that will connect to the main building through an enclosed glass bridge. The project, which broke ground in the summer of 2025, is currently targeted for opening during the fall of 2027. While emphasizing that construction timelines can always change, Mr. Martinez said the project is “a little bit ahead of schedule.”

Eastview Middle School sixth-grade students recently took an exciting step toward becoming independent library users through the White Plains Public Library's "Introduction to The Edge" program. The experience was designed to help students transition from the library's children's section, The Trove, to The Edge, a dedicated space for teens. Throughout the day, students explored the library through an interactive iPad scavenger hunt, participated in hands-on STEM activities and tackled creative design challenges that encouraged critical thinking and empathy.
